An umbrella under heavy rain

The monsoon is coming… let’s make it the driest ever

If you live in Sweden, then June to September is a time of summer skies and sunshine. That’s the fantasy anyway after the cold, often dark months of October all the way to May. But at Absortech, even with many of us based in Sweden, these months mean one thing … monsoon season!

The shipping risks during monsoon

June to September is the period when the South and East Asian tropics – and the world’s busiest trade routes – are affected by heavy rains. This rainy season is actually a combination of the Indian monsoon, Indo-Australian monsoon and East Asian monsoon, but for ocean-going cargos there’s little respite as they’ll pass through one or more of those weather systems on their way to the rest of the world.

Of course, it’s a more critical time for us and our customers because the wet season equals more moisture damage protection to keep the cargo dry in high humidity shipping routes. And needing to think more and even do more to ensure safe margins and peace of mind.

How to protect cargo from moisture during monsoon?

Here’s a handy checklist based on our experience to make life easier during these wetter times:

  1. Make sure the container is dry when loading.
  2. Make sure the pallets and packaging material are dry when loading.
  3. Check the container is undamaged and in good condition.
  4. If your cargo doesn’t need to “breathe”, close the vents.
  5. Make sure you are using the right amount of desiccants.
  6. Control that the desiccants are installed properly.
  7. Don’t hesitate to ask an expert (us) if you have any doubts.

Which are the best desiccants for container shipping during monsoon?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this. While calcium chloride desiccants are extremely effective in high-moisture environments—like the inside of a shipping container during the rainy season—the best option from our desiccant range depends on a few important factors, including:

  • How long the trip will take
  • What kind of cargo you’re shipping
  • How it’s packaged
  • And more

Different conditions call for different solutions, and we’re here to help you find the right one. Get in touch with our experts and we’ll make sure your cargo stays dry, even when the forecast doesn’t.
