To explore this crucial question, GALIA, the French industry association supporting standards and innovation in the automotive sector, has launched a new work group: “Circular Economy: Impacts on Automotive Packaging.” Absortech is proud to take part in this initiative, represented by Fredrik Lindberg and Raphaël Lessinger, who bring extensive expertise in moisture protection and packaging optimization. The work group brings together leading automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and packaging experts to share knowledge, align on future regulations, and define best practices that support a more sustainable supply chain. We spoke with Fredrik Lindberg, Regional Director at Absortech, about the group’s mission, the challenges facing automotive packaging, and how moisture protection fits into a circular future. What is this GALIA work group about, and why is it important? It is about collecting best practices from across the industry to optimize packaging solutions, comply with regulations, and help companies reach their sustainability goals while identifying opportunities for cost savings. What motivated Absortech to take part in this initiative? Absortech brings a unique approach to the packaging configuration, especially in corrosion protection. Our method can reduce plastic use and CO₂ emissions by 50 percent or more without economic compromise. We wanted to contribute this perspective to the discussion and to the guidelines being developed. It is also a great opportunity to spread awareness about this innovative initiative across the industry. How do you see the connection between circular economy and moisture protection? The connection is very strong. Moisture damage such as corrosion is both costly and unsustainable, and it often leads companies to design heavily over-dimensioned packaging solutions as a safeguard. Since moisture risk is unpredictable, over-engineering becomes the default. With better moisture control, we can make packaging leaner, lighter, and more circular. What are the key challenges the automotive industry faces in packaging today? Meeting material regulations, developing new packaging for new parts under tight deadlines, and dealing with fluctuations in raw material prices while maintaining quality are major challenges. These pressures often result in costly and non-sustainable solutions. What do you hope the GALIA group will achieve? I hope the group will help spread awareness about new concepts like ours and inspire more studies in this field. Absortech will never stand still but continue driving sustainable improvements for our customers. The connection to people working directly with packaging and logistics will help us shape the next generation of corrosion protection, and the next, and the next. Collaboration for a circular future The work group includes representatives from major automotive players such as Renault Group, Stellantis, Valeo, Knauf Industries, Feurer Febra, and Corplex, among others. Together, members aim to establish a shared understanding of legislation, exchange sustainability objectives, and identify circular solutions for the packaging used in the automotive sector. Absortech’s participation aligns with its broader vision of eliminating waste in global supply chains through innovation in moisture damage prevention and packaging efficiency. Meet Absortech at GALIA Day 2025 We’ll be attending GALIA Day 2025 in Paris on November 27. Come talk to our team, Fredrik itself and Raphaël Lessinger, about replacing traditional VCI methods, cutting plastic and CO₂, and building circular, corrosion-safe packaging solutions.
